As a special treat for Teacher\u2019s Day, we had the pleasure of joining our dear Cristofori teachers at the historic Victoria Concert Hall to experience Czech pianist Maty\u00e1\u0161 Nov\u00e1k\u2019s recital on 26 September 2025. It was a rare opportunity to celebrate both the artistry of a rising Czech pianist and the joy of sharing music with those who inspire and nurture young musicians every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recital, titled\u00a0A Czech Pianist\u2019s Homage to National Spirit \u2013 Music of the Four Greats<\/em>, highlighted the rich heritage of Czech classical music, performed on the Petrof Monsoon grand piano, a handcrafted instrument embodying 160 years of Bohemian tradition. In Nov\u00e1k\u2019s hands, the piano became an authentic voice of Czech culture, transforming every piece into a living tribute to the composers who shaped it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme opened with a selection from Bed\u0159ich Smetana\u2019s\u00a0Czech Dances<\/em>, setting the tone with a bold, vibrant\u00a0Furiant<\/em>\u00a0that gave way to moments of quaint charm. The Petrof\u2019s resonance added weight and richness even in the upper registers, enhancing the rustic character of the music. In\u00a0The Little Hen<\/em>, Nov\u00e1k captured the whimsical scenery of chickens darting about the farmyard before lifting the piece into the exuberant joy of country life.\u00a0The Lancer<\/em>\u00a0followed with lilting elegance, its dappled, sunlit atmosphere handled with balance and poise, like a musical journey through the Czech countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo\u0161 Jan\u00e1\u010dek\u2019s\u00a0Sonata 1.X.1905 (\u201cFrom the Street\u201d)<\/em>\u00a0brought introspection and drama, with the movements\u00a0Presentiment<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Death<\/em>\u00a0drawing the audience into Jan\u00e1\u010dek\u2019s deeply expressive world. The recital concluded within Nov\u00e1k\u2019s fantasia on themes from Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s\u00a0Rusalka<\/em>\u00a0and also his transcription of Smetana\u2019s\u00a0Vltava (The Moldau)<\/em>, a flowing musical narrative depicting the flow of the the longest river in the Czech Republic that highlighted both the composer\u2019s vision and the Petrof\u2019s singing tone. Encores included Dvo\u0159\u00e1k\u2019s beloved\u00a0Humoresque No. 7<\/em>\u00a0and the lively\u00a0Furiant<\/em>, leaving the audience captivated by Nov\u00e1k\u2019s artistry and storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What made this recital truly unique was the seamless marriage of performance, repertoire, and instrument. The Petrof Monsoon grand piano, with its warm, earthy resonance, became a voice of Czech heritage. In the hands of devoted Czech pianist Maty\u00e1\u0161 Nov\u00e1k, the evening transformed into a living cultural tribute. For one night in Singapore, Petrof\u2019s 160-year tradition and Nov\u00e1k\u2019s artistry united to bring the spirit of Czech music vividly to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing this experience together reminded us why music matters, not just in performance, but in the connections it nurtures, the stories it tells, and the joy it brings to all who listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
